DELNIWA

THE EARLIEST POLISH PRIMOCANE CV FOR DESSERT USE WITH LONG SHELF LIVE

Main characteristics: Early primocane, medium to large fruited, pest & disease resistant or tolerance.

Breeder: Niwa Berry Breeding Ltd., Poland.

Spine, upright canes. Useful for organic or low input production systems. ‘Delniwa’ is the first release in a series of primocane fruiting raspberry cultivars (Rubus idaeus L.) which will be developing by Niwa Berry Breeding Ltd. in near future. ‘Delniwa’ ripens early, 14 days before ‘Polka’. ‘Delniwa’ produces lager fruit than ‘Polana’, and slightly bigger than ‘Polka’. Origin: Polish, bred in the Niwa Berry Breeding Ltd. by PhD Agnieszka Orzeł.

The original plant was selected in the seedling field at the Niwa Berry Breeding Lt., Brzezna, and tested as selection NR136101. The most thorough testing of ‘Delniwa’ has been at this location. Cropping Season: ‘Delniwa’ is an early season variety, the 50% pick dates ranging between 25 August – 31 August compared to 6-8 September for ‘Polana’ in Poland production over 2 years. In field cultivation and under cover the fruit ripening is the earliest among other Polish cultivars ('Polana', 'Polka', ‘Poemat’ and 'Polonez'). The harvest is concentrated, plants planted in the tunnel in June reach the full harvest before first frosts in the first year after planting.

Fruit quality: The berries are glossy, conical in shape, with good, bright colour and have a good-fair flavour. They don’t dark after storage like ‘Polka’ does. The average berry weight recorded over the whole season under tunnel in 2016 was 5,0 g and in 2017 4,6 g respectively. The shelf life was fairly good and in totally unsprayed plots there were not observed post-harvest fruit rots. The soluble solid content (SSC) ranges between 9-11 % Brix.

Fruit Yield: ‘Delniwa’ has good yield potential. The average yield per one cane from plants planted in June under a tunnel was 0,8 kg. In a tunnel production plants planted in April can be carried out on two crops in one season. Plant Characteristics: The canes of ‘Delniwa’ are upright, light green with dense thorns. The average length of canes grown in the field is between 1,3-1,6 m. The fruit is produced on medium to long fruiting laterals in the top half of the canes; it is easily plugged and well presented to the pickers. Disease Resistance Susceptibility to shoot and fruit diseases is low.
